gear we love from Patagonia

Patagonia 30% off winter sale: February 22 - March 8

Patagonia is one of my favorite companies to purchase clothing from and their gear has long been an essential part of my outdoor clothing layering system!

That's why I'm excited to remind you that the annual Patagonia Winter Sale is here!! 30% off from February 22 to March 8!

Patagonia’s gear and clothing is quality and they stand by that (they would rather you fix worn gear than replace it!), and after I read their book "Let my People Go Surfing", I gained a whole new respect for the company and how it views growth and sustainability.

The one downside is that with this quality and attention to sustainability, their gear can typically be pretty expensive, especially if you’re just getting started building up some of your essential backpacking gear items.

Look, I get it!

But for me, the gear from Patagonia is definitely worth the extra cost (some of the pieces I invested in are still going strong even after 7 years of use in the mountains), but if you're on a tighter budget but still want to support companies like Patagonia, then you should really spend some time looking through Patagonia’s Winter Sale Deals that are going on right now until March 8th!

What patagonia gear Do I recommend?

There are TONs of deals on Patagonia’s website right now, but instead of listing them all, I thought I’d tell you about 4 of my FAVORITE Patagonia items that I consider an essential part of my “outdoor layering” system.

And even though I’ll be recommending “women’s” items, MOST of the gear items also have a “men’s” version as well. In fact, I sometimes buy the men’s versions because I like the color options better. ;)

Here's my personal Patagonia outdoor clothing layering system and why i love and recommend these items constantly!

  1. Patagonia’s Long-Sleeved Capilene® Cool Lightweight

On their website, Patagonia describes the magic behind this baselayer the best, “Capilene® baselayers wick moisture, dry fast and are made to handle the start/stop temperature variations in cool to frigid conditions,” and I can 100% attest to this. Plus, as I've gotten a bit older I've started realizing how important sun protection is which is why I opt for the long-sleeve version of this lightweight baselayer. I bought one of these 5 years ago and I seriously wear it all the time (still, the SAME one lol!).

Of course, they also make this base layer in varying thicknesses, but this is just one of my favorite essentials because of how lightweight it is for use in cold and hot scenarios (and layering with other jackets when necessary, like the Nano Puff).

Sizing reference: I’m 5’8” and about 148lbs, and I wear a size women’s medium in this.

  2. Patagonia’s Nano Puff Jacket

The Nano Puff is a Patagonia classic, and for a good reason!

This is a great jacket to have in your “jacket arsenal”  and is my favorite “mid-layer” when I need something warm but breathable for cold winter hiking. I also love this for a lighter jacket option to take with me on day hikes.

Sizing reference: I’m 5’8” and about 148lbs, and I wear a size women’s small in this.

  3. Patagonia’s Down Sweater Jacket

I literally wear this thing everywhere. The Patagonia Down Sweater is my go-to down jacket layer for staying warm in the mountains during the summer and fall seasons.

In fact, if you were to only buy ONE of my 4 recommendations, I would try to sway you towards buying the down sweater first, because you can squeak by with cheaper (maybe stuff you already own even) layers for base and mid layers when you’re getting started, but having a NICE, warm down jacket for when you stop moving and you’re hanging out in the mountains is absolutely essential!

You’ll find me wearing my down sweater when I stop for snacks during a long hike, or at the top of a peak when I’m taking in the views, or in the evening when I’m hanging out at camp… or at the grocery store or in the house or at the movie theater.

You get the picture. I wear this jacket everywhere.

Sizing reference: I’m 5’8” and about 148lbs, and I wear a size women’s small in this.

  4. Patagonia’s Houdini® Jacket

Small caveat here: I don’t own the Houdini jacket, I own a version they called the Alpine Houdini (which they discontinued for some reason), but I still think this would make a lovely jacket in your layering arsenal.

Michael and I both invested in the *Alpine Houdini Jacket so that we could have something really small to take with us on multi-pitch rock climbs to help protect us from the wind. Patagonia describes this jacket as a “take-it-anywhere jacket with weather-resistant protection for high-output endeavors.” I agree.

Sizing reference: I’m 5’8” and about 148lbs, and I wear a size men’s extra-small in this. This was one of those scenarios where I opted to buy the men’s version (at the time) because I preferred the color choices.

Anyway, I hope this little overview was useful for you and that you snag some GREAT deals during Patagonia’s Winter Sale.

Regulating your body temperature in the mountains is a KEY aspect of staying SAFE in the mountains - these pieces help me regulate the wide temperature swings I can experience out in the backcountry - I rarely hit the trails without them!

Cheers,
